William Checkley, MD, PhD, is Associate Professor of Medicine, International Health and Biostatistics at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Checkley’s research has focused on the epidemiology of COPD in low- and middle-income countries. He is leading observational studies on the association between biomass fuel smoke exposure and lung function, and intervention trials of improved cookstoves and clean fuel strategies to reduce biomass fuel smoke exposure and improve pulmonary outcomes. Dr. Checkley is Principal Investigator in the recently funded Global Environmental and Occupational Health Hub NIH-sponsored network and in an NIH-funded multi-country randomized intervention field trial of liquefied propane gas on health outcomes across the lifespan. Dr. Checkley has authored >150 publications in peer-reviewed journals and is a member of the editorial board of six medical journals.
